This Week at Woodshed - November 30th

Here we are, almost in December! 

With snow falling and the temperature dropping outside, this week calls for comfort food. We will make shepherd's pie with Redwing Farm lamb and our vegetarian shepherd's pie with Canadian-grown Le Puy lentils, organic vegetables, and olive oil mashed potatoes.

A lovely dinner at this time of year is our Chicken a la Moutarde, with house-made creme fraiche, Southend sausage pancetta, and tarragon. As always, the chicken is organic, as is the creme fraiche. We recommend serving this dish with mashed or roasted potatoes or just as is with a crisp Autumn salad.

We have our 24-hour beef bone broth simmering on the stove that we will use as the base of our classic French onion soup, delicious on its own or topped with toasted bread and gruyere cheese as in the best French cafes. The image of Parisians in crowded cafes and bars, chilled from walking out in the weather, eagerly enjoying steaming hot bowls of french onion soup, is a favourite memory of my late Autumn travels in Paris.

Also, on the stove, we have a lovely Moroccan carrot soup with warming harissa spices, fresh lemon, and a touch of honey. Ginger squash soup made with roasted squash from several beautiful farms on the island is a staple these days, with the warming and immune-boosting qualities of fresh ginger giving us a little lift.

This week, an excellent new addition to the shop menu will be a Thai-inspired green curry, with the vibrant addition of fresh Kaffir lime leaves from Jane Squire's garden. This curry is mild, vegetarian, full of organic veggies, and gluten and dairy free. We recommend serving it with a simple pot of basmati or jasmine rice.

On the sweet side, for pre-ordrers, we will feature local harvest pumpkin pies, jars of freshly made lemon mousse with Jane's citrus, and a lovely Calvados and creme fraiche apple tart.

As we mentioned last week, we are continuing on with our regular hours as we approach the holidays. We are open Wednesday to Saturday, 10-5, and Sunday, 10-3. We will be open on December 23rd and then closed from December 24th until the 27th. We will reopen on Wednesday, December 28th, and remain open through New Year's Eve.
